MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Consumer Price Index

In May, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers was unchanged, seasonally adjusted, and rose 3.3 percent over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.2 percent in May (SA); up 3.4 percent over the year (NSA).

Employment Cost Index

Compensation costs increased 1.2 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from December 2023 to March 2024. Over the year, total compensation rose 4.2 percent, wages and salaries rose 4.4 percent, and benefit costs rose 3.7 percent.

Employment Situation

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 272,000 in May, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.0 percent. Employment continued to trend up in several industries, led by health care; government; leisure and hospitality; and professional, scientific, and technical services.

Producer Price Index

The Producer Price Index for final demand declined 0.2 percent in May. Prices for final demand goods declined 0.8 percent, and the index for final demand services was unchanged. The index for final demand advanced 2.2 percent for the 12 months ended in May.

Productivity and Costs

Productivity increased 0.2 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the first quarter of 2024; unit labor costs increased 4.0 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity was unchanged and unit labor costs increased 3.1 percent.

Real Earnings

Real average hourly earnings for all employees increased 0.5 percent in May, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings increased 0.4 percent, and CPI-U was unchanged. Real average weekly earnings increased 0.4 percent.

U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes

Prices for U.S. imports declined 0.4 percent in May after an increase of 0.9 percent in April. U.S. export prices decreased 0.6 percent in May following a 0.6-percent advance the previous month. Over the past year, import prices rose 1.1 percent and export prices increased 0.6 percent.
