MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Consumer Price Index

In October, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.2 percent, seasonally adjusted, and rose 2.6 percent over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3 percent in October (SA); up 3.3 percent over the year (NSA).

Employment Cost Index

Compensation costs increased 0.8 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from June 2024 to September 2024. Over the year, total compensation rose 3.9 percent, wages and salaries rose 3.9 percent, and benefit costs rose 3.7 percent.

Employment Situation

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 227,000 in November, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.2 percent. Employment trended up in health care, leisure and hospitality, government, and social assistance. Retail trade lost jobs.

Producer Price Index

The Producer Price Index for final demand increased 0.2 percent in October. Prices for final demand services advanced 0.3 percent, and the index for final demand goods inched up 0.1 percent. Prices for final demand rose 2.4 percent for the 12 months ended in October.

Productivity and Costs

Productivity increased 2.2 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the third quarter of 2024; unit labor costs increased 1.9 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 1.0 percent and unit labor costs increased 5.3 percent.

Real Earnings

Real average hourly earnings for all employees increased 0.1 percent in October, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings increased 0.4 percent, and CPI-U increased 0.2 percent. Real average weekly earnings increased 0.1 percent.

U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes

Prices for U.S. imports increased 0.3 percent in October, after decreasing 0.4 percent in September. U.S. export prices rose 0.8 percent in October following a 0.6-percent drop the previous month. Over the past year, import prices advanced 0.8 percent and export prices fell 0.1 percent.
