MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS
Consumer Price Index
In March, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers fell 0.1 percent, seasonally adjusted, and rose 2.4 percent over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.1 percent in March (SA); up 2.8 percent over the year (NSA).
Employment Cost Index
Compensation costs increased 0.9 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from December 2024 to March 2025. Over the year, total compensation rose 3.6 percent, wages and salaries rose 3.5 percent, and benefit costs rose 3.8 percent.
Employment Situation
Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 177,000 in April, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.2 percent. Employment continued to trend up in health care, transportation and warehousing, financial activities, and social assistance. Federal government employment declined.
Producer Price Index
The Producer Price Index for final demand decreased 0.4 percent in March. Prices for final demand goods fell 0.9 percent, and the index for final demand services declined 0.2 percent. Prices for final demand advanced 2.7 percent for the 12 months ended in March.
Productivity and Costs
Productivity decreased 0.8 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the first quarter of 2025; unit labor costs increased 5.7 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 4.5 percent and unit labor costs increased 1.6 percent.
Real Earnings
Real average hourly earnings for all employees increased 0.3 percent in March, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings increased 0.3 percent, and CPI-U decreased 0.1 percent. Real average weekly earnings increased 0.3 percent.

U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes
U.S. import prices declined 0.1 percent in March following a 0.2-percent rise in February. Prices for U.S. exports were unchanged in March, after advancing 0.5 percent the previous month. Over the past year, import prices increased 0.9 percent and export prices rose 2.4 percent.
